Popcorn Beach in Spain Exists and Your Brain Will Explode When You See It

If you think you’ve seen every type of beach on Earth — white-sand, black-sand, pebble, volcanic, crystal-clear, dramatic cliffs — Spain is about to hit you with a plot twist.
On the northern coast of Fuerteventura, there’s a shore that looks like someone dumped a giant bucket of movie-theater popcorn across the entire coastline… and no, your eyes are not lying.

Welcome to Playa del Bajo de la Burra, better known as Popcorn Beach — a place so weird, so photogenic, and so downright fascinating that it keeps going viral over and over again. It’s the kind of beach you don’t go to swim… you go to starephotograph, and question all of your life choices because HOW is this even real?

Let’s break it down.

What Exactly Is Popcorn Beach?

Spoiler: it’s not popcorn (please don’t eat it), and it’s not even rocks.
The “popcorn” pieces are rhodoliths — ancient, calcareous algae that harden over time and get bleached by the sun. Think coral-meets-popcorn, but tiny and porous.

According to Canary Islands Tourism:

  • The beach’s “popcorn” is formed from calcareous algae + white sand accumulated over at least 50 years.
  • Rhodoliths grow underwater at a rate of about 1 mm per year.
  • Some rhodoliths are over 4,000 years old.
  • They wash onto shore naturally, creating this bizarre, Instagram-bait landscape.

A 2022 study published in Frontiers in Marine Science also found:

  • The main species here is Lithothamnion cf. corallioides.
  • Rhodolith beds surround Fuerteventura and constantly deposit debris that forms modern beaches.
  • Their growth depends on light, temperature, hydrodynamics, marine barriers, coral abundance, and sedimentation.
  • Removing them harms the ecosystem because dead rhodolith debris helps sustain and build the beach.

Translation:
Take the photos — don’t take the popcorn.

Why Popcorn Beach Goes Viral Every Year

Because it looks exactly like a giant snack bowl spilled onto a beach.
Zoom in: it’s popcorn.
Zoom out: it’s a beach.
Your brain will glitch.

Nearby beaches like Playa del Hierro also have similar popcorn features, so the whole area is basically a natural special effect.

What It’s Actually Like to Visit

Popcorn Beach is not your typical “lay-down-and-tan” spot. Here’s what to expect:

✔️ What You Can Do:

  • Walk around and take surreal photos
  • Wander a completely unique natural landscape
  • Enjoy quiet views and rugged coastline
  • Have a scenic picnic
  • Explore northern Fuerteventura afterward

✖️ What You Can’t Do:

  • Swim comfortably — the waves are rough and often “too dangerous”
  • Find loungers or umbrellas — this is a wild beach
  • Take home rhodoliths — seriously, leave them

If you’re here for a chill beach day, this is not the one.
If you’re here for one of the strangest natural beaches in Europe, you’re in the right place.

Best Time to Visit

Technically any time of year works, but for ideal weather and fewer people:

  • April – June
  • September – November
  • Early mornings → best for empty-photo vibes and cooler temps

The beach is exposed and windy, so mornings win, always.

How to Get to Popcorn Beach

Your base: Corralejo, in the municipality of La Oliva — the closest town.

Option 1: Walk

  • About 1+ hour from Corralejo
  • Beautiful but long, bring water

Option 2: Drive

  • Totally doable
  • Expect a bumpy dirt road
  • Travelers describe it as “tedious” but worth it

Once you arrive, the landscape feels almost lunar — quiet, bizarre, and full of popcorn-shaped fossils crunching under your feet.

Where to Stay Nearby

If you want a cute, adult-only escape after exploring the northern coast:

Casa Montelongo

  • Adults-only
  • About 30 minutes from Popcorn Beach
  • Calm, minimalistic, great base for exploring Fuerteventura

Why You Should NOT Take the Popcorn Home

The 2022 scientific study is crystal clear:

  • Rhodoliths are essential for biodiversity
  • They play a major role in ecosystem functions
  • Removing them causes long-term damage to the beach
  • A “substantial amount” has already been taken by visitors

So… post all the Reels you want.
Just let the “popcorn” stay where it belongs.
